Point of Law Clinches Thrilling Melbourne Cup Victory
The three-year-old colt, formerly owned by King Charles, secured the prestigious prize at Flemington for trainer Ciaron Maher.

Point of Law has won the 166th staging of the Melbourne Cup, overtaking Royal Supremacy in the final stages of the race at Flemington. The three-year-old colt was ridden by jockey Ethan Brown, who described the win as a dream come true. The victory marks a significant comeback for Brown, who returned to racing after a life-threatening fall in 2023.
The horse was recently purchased from King Charles by a group of investors, including former AFL player Chris Judd. Trainer Ciaron Maher achieved a historic feat by saddling the top three finishers, with Zahrann and Juja Kibo placing second and third respectively. Maher had a record seven horses entered in the twenty-three runner field.
The event was preceded by a performance from pop star Robbie Williams, though the day was not without administrative incident. Trainer Chris Waller was fined A$50,000 after his horse, Asterix, was scratched from the race. Stewards found that a staff member had mistakenly applied a prohibited anti-inflammatory medication on the morning of the event.
The Melbourne Cup remains one of Australia's most valuable and prestigious races, carrying a prize of over A$10 million. While the Guardian noted polling suggests a decline in general interest among Australians, the event still drew tens of thousands of spectators to the course and significant betting turnover.
