Democrats have won control of both the US Senate and the House of Representatives in Tuesday's midterm elections, according to projections by the Associated Press, CBS News and NBC News.

By Wednesday morning, Democrats held 54 Senate seats, including two independents who sit with the party, against 44 for Republicans, with 33 of 35 contests called, The Guardian's results tracker showed. Before the vote Republicans held 53 seats.

In the House, where all 435 seats were contested, Democrats had won 228 seats to Republicans' 139, with 367 races called. A majority requires 218.

The AP described the outcome as a widespread repudiation of President Trump and the Republican Party, reaching into reliable Republican territory. House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, now poised to become Speaker, told supporters: "Today begins the great American comeback," the BBC reported.

Several dozen races had not yet been called and final totals may change.
